What is culture and how can we study it This article examines the origins, debates and challenges of the culture concept in cultural studies, and explores its implications for contemporary research and practice. Based on examples from the media, literature, politics and everyday life, the article advocates a critical and reflexive approach. It turns out that this whole "how far apart are we" business goes by the name of proxemics and can be defined as how personal space is maintained as a function of one's culture. The term was coined by Edward Hall and is just one aspect of non-verbal communication. Hall interviewed large numbers of people from all over the world. Like the other public surveyed, Americans are largely positive about their technological achievements, entertainment and military. Republicans tend to be more positive about these various aspects of American society, although Democrats give more positive reviews of the country's films, music and television.
