English Literature S - Essay on Cultural Identity
This article examines the ways in which Latino children's literature portrays cultural models of bilingualism and identity relations based on language and cultural practices. We draw attention to the messages in seven children's books about practices and attitudes toward Spanglish, Standard Spanish, and individually and socially, Defining 'Culture'. Castells, 2009: 36 provides a general definition of 'culture' as 'the set of values and beliefs that inform, guide and motivate people's behavior'. Another useful definition describes culture as: 'membership in a discourse community that shares a common social space and history, and common imaginations. The reality defined by our culture is what shapes how we do things, what we believe about life, and how we behave. and respond to other people. A big part of changing someone's personal identity is changing the prevailing cultural narrative that influences him or her. Values, beliefs and behavioral changes are temporary. Cultural identity has a lot to do with mental health and the way you were raised. So the ability to identify with the culture has benefits and makes people stronger and able to interact with more people and to communicate and form groups with people in the same culture as them.
