Abstract. Social work in New Zealand shares with other countries many of the challenges of identity and autonomy in a mixed welfare system. Social workers work in statutory child welfare services. Māori social work practice is developed on a strong foundation of indigenous knowledge, theories and values. Theories can be used to validate social work practice and to build and improve engagement between employees and whānau. This article describes some Māori theories of social work and how they both developed.
