Stereotypes and English Language Teaching Student Essay




A stereotype causes people to define other people they meet for the first time. We easily determine who people are based on their appearance, race, gender, where they were born, what kind of families. This data suggests that people have a deep desire to reverse negative stereotypes, and this desire shows up in everyday conversations. Stereotypes force us into rigid boxes, and we try to break through them. Gender-fair language GFL, introduced in response to this structural asymmetry and as part of a broader effort to reduce stereotyping and discrimination in language, see Fairclough, 2003 Maass et al. 2013, for the political correctness debate. GFL strives to eliminate asymmetries in referring to and addressing women and men because two of the most common stereotypes associated with ELLs are: 1. English language proficiency is an indicator of intellect, and 2. ELLs cannot learn material that is in English is taught until they master it. Research shows that English takes seven to ten years. So the first thing students in my class learn is that the language is forty-seven students. 15 from. the total population has a high level of exposure to the English language, 61 of the total population has moderate exposure.
