Image provided by the author. I picked up my copy of Kitchen 1988 by Banana Yoshimoto at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. The book was recommended to me by one of my senpai in, Banana Yoshimoto's Progressive Politics. It's easy to see the impact such a liberal youth had on Yoshimoto, with one quick look at the elements that make up the real beauty of novella Kitchen. Early on in the story, we are introduced to a pair of completely unique characters from Japanese literature: Yuichi and Eriko Tanabe. Banana Yoshimoto's slim volume, which consists of the title novella and Moonlight Shadow, an accompanying short story, has sold millions of copies. in Japan, and won two prestigious literary prizes.
