Young people who commit violent crimes are strongly influenced by their background, personal characteristics, access to weapons and media reporting of abuse. At the same time, these reasons also apply to young people who have experienced violence. The two main impacts of youth violence are the spread of abuse in the social and health sectors. In this essay, I illustrate how discussions about the effects of violence on communities are enhanced through the use of a critical framework that links various micro variables to macro-institutional processes. Building on my work on the issue of violent victimization toward African American women and how conventional justice, the primary cause of domestic violence is drug and substance abuse.
