UV radiation and total ozone column biology essay
Abstract. Measurements of the total ozone column and the effective cloud transmission were carried out at the three Norwegian locations Oslo Kjeller, And ya Troms and in Nylesund Svalbard. These locations form a subset of nine stations included in the Norwegian UV monitoring network, which uses ultraviolet ground radiation. In addition to the total and stratospheric ozone column, we analyze the scenario-dependent evolution in the upper and lower stratosphere to separate the response of the different processes. Ozone changes in the model are calculated interactively in response to ODS and greenhouse gas evolution and are directly linked to changes in UV. The model calculated parameters including radiation, weight spectral integrals for specific wavelength bands and biologically active irradiance, i.e. UVI. Input data for the model includes total column ozone, total column nitrogen dioxide, climatological ozone and temperature profiles, AOD AE 340 - SSA, for SZAs smaller ∘, the extended k 2 uncertainty, for UVB radiation, UV index and DNA -irradiation damage. The total ozone column is calculated from GUV measurements with look-up tables, which relate the total ozone column to SZA and the ratio of GUV measurements, nm. Although GEOSCCM reproduces the total column increase quite well, it overestimates the stratospheric ozone increase and underestimates the tropospheric ozone increase. We find that the increase in tropospheric ozone is likely attributed to an increase in regional emissions of important ozone precursors, especially volatile organic compounds.,
