Acquiring communicative competence in the second language English Language Essay




The term 'communicative competence' was initially coined by Dell Hymes, Hymes, 1979. Hymes criticized Chomsky for the narrow definition he gave to language competence in his book Syntactic Structure, claiming that true mastery of a language requires much more. as cited in Hymes, 1979, p. 2. According to this scoping review, the role of grammar in second language teaching and learning is studied. This exploratory review focuses primarily on synthesizing relevant research and literature on grammar acquisition. Students learning English as a second or foreign language must have sufficient vocabulary to use the English language effectively in any academic environment Beiki et al. 2020. This work compares four of the most commonly used teaching approaches in the context of foreign languages: Grammar -translation, audiolingual, communicative and natural approaches.
