The analysis is based on balanced panel data over time spanning commercial Indian banks. The profitability of Indian banks is measured by two metrics, namely returns. Our profitability determinants include bank-specific characteristics, as well as sector-specific and macroeconomic factors, some of which have not been included in previous studies. Taking these additional factors into account and considering the crisis years separately allows us to gain new insights into what determines the crisis.
