Dyadic Relationships and Athletes' Well-Being Psychology Essay




Chronic disabling health conditions affect an increasing number of people worldwide. In close relationships, disability is an interpersonal experience. Psychological problems are therefore common, both among patients and their spouses. Dyadic coping can alleviate stress and promote adjustment in couples dealing with disabling health. Research on romantic relationships has focused, among other things, on the matching effect of attachment between dyadic partners, because a matching perspective could reveal interdependence and interaction. The purpose of this study was to make an original contribution to the sport psychology literature by offering a substantively grounded theory of dyadic coping in coach-athlete relationships. This study specifically aimed to document the development and manifestation of dyadic coping for coaches and athletes active in individual sports.
