Saltwater intrusion into the coastal aquifer, a phenomenon caused by the flow of seawater into freshwater aquifers, originally caused by groundwater extraction near the coast, has long been recognized as a major problem around the world. In this study we used geophysical and geochemical techniques to map and provide evidence that, being located in geologically active environments, the distribution of water types is often influenced by long-term geological processes, for example sea level fluctuations . From a water management perspective, coastal aquifers are vulnerable to salinization of fresh groundwater due to seawater intrusion and rising. The future doesn't look good either: seawater intrusion is a pressing problem in coastal aquifers worldwide. Surface water sources, such as rivers and canals, are seriously affected by saltwater intrusion 1,2. In the megadelta coastal areas of Vietnam, Bangladesh, and India, surface and near-surface drinking water are most susceptible to contamination by saline. This rice-shrimp farming system illustrates how agricultural practices can adapt to environmental challenges. It represents a resilient response to saltwater intrusion that aligns with the principles of NBS – harnessing natural processes to create sustainable and adaptive agricultural systems in an era of changing and rising climate.
