Ishmael finally reveals his proof English literature essay




By Dr Oliver Tearle Loughborough University 'Polics and the English Language' 1946 is one of the best-known essays by George Orwell 1903-50. As the title suggests, Orwell identifies a connection between the degraded English language of his time and the degraded political situation: Orwell sees modern discourse as primarily political. While the gentile name Ishmaelites is one of the collective names of Arab tribes, the personal name Ishmael is a character from the Abraham story. The name, with its use of the Hebrew root ש.מ.ע, suited the literary needs of the author in Genesis, who depicted God as the one who heard Hagar's affliction 16:11, Abraham's distress.
