Abstract. This essay argues that the concept of 'racial capitalism' can help us understand the connections between seemingly disparate parts of Voltaire's extensive oeuvre. It is argued that Voltaire stood out from his contemporaries, even though the racial politics of the Enlightenment were full of contradictions and ambivalence.
